The Sweetest Green Smoothie

Now that autumn has arrived, it is a great way to start the new season by supporting natural elimination pathways by eating nourishing foods so that you would have a strong immune system to thrive through the darkest and coldest months. This nutrient-dense smoothie recipe comes with all essential amino acids (thanks to the greens super powder!), vitamin C, and various micronutrients and antioxidants, such as iron and glutathione.

Drinking green smoothies is a brilliant way to consume chlorophyll-rich greens which we all need on a daily basis for optimal health. Chlorophyll is the life force in plants that makes them bloom, like the flowing blood in our bodies. It’s the green pigment that plants use to absorb energy from the light. Strong leafy greens, cereal grasses (like wheat grass and barley), and algae contain high levels of chlorophyll. Moreover, these greens are wonderful because they reduce inflammation and help to alkalise the body.

To reset your body and appetite, drink a green smoothie in the morning. I believe in eating everything in moderation, which means occasional treats too. When you start your day with the right ingredients, you don’t need to feel guilty if you end up finishing your day eating out. Furthermore, nutrient-rich foods keep us satisfied longer, meaning we are less likely to end up starving and then binge-eating. Real, whole foods also make us feel more grounded and better tuned in with our intuition: we know what we need, when, and how much.

Magic Ingredients For the Recipe:

Greens Powder

Every once in a while I like to add some greens/ superfood powder to my smoothies to help to detox and rebuild cells in the body, support the immune system, fight fatigue, and maximize energy. For this recipe I used one that was a mixture of greens, such as wheat grass, barley grass, spirulina, chlorella, and probiotic. For instance, both blue-green algae spirulina and chlorella are rich in chlorophyll, essential omega-3 fatty acids, and antioxidants.

Coconut Water

If you want to try something different, use coconut water for this recipe instead of water. Coconut water is rich in potassium, helping with kidney function and muscle contraction. It can also boost vitamin, electrolyte, and mineral levels in the body.

Fresh Ginger

This is an optional ingredient but I like to use fresh ginger during cooler months since it is well known to elevate our immune system, reduce inflammation, and support healthy digestion. Fresh ginger also brings a nice, fresh flavour to smoothies or warm meals.

Citrus Fruits

Citrus fruits are super high in vitamin C that is essential for the immune system. And since vitamin C is water soluble and the body cannot store it, you should get it every single day from the foods that you eat. Supplementation is never the same thing as real foods, because real foods come with so much more than a single vitamin, like fiber, antioxidants, as well as many essential minerals that are needed for optimal health.
